Pretty Lights is the musical vision of the ultra-versatile Colorado based producer Derek Vincent Smith, accompanied in the live setting by drummer, Cory Eberhard. Together these two achieve a raw energy rarely reached in the realm of electronic music. At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures, and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of bangin’ beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want; electro organic cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion, and send dance floors into frenzies. What makes Pretty Lights truly different tho, is that these beats have serious soul. Derek’s latest album, “Filling Up The City Skies” is a two disc, 26 track journey through past, present, and future. He juxtaposes collages of beautiful vintage samples against backdrops of futuristic synthesis and dirty broken beats, creating a sound that can snap your neck while simultaneously shedding your tears. The album has been downloaded over 30,000 times from the Pretty Lights website in the short 3 months since its release, proving that the PL sound is not only getting around, it’s spreading like a virus. In the recent years that Deadmau5 emerged in the electronic music world, he’s gone on to make his way quickly and impressively to the top as one of the industry’s most recognized and successful DJ’s. In 2008 he released his debut album Random Album Title through Ultra Records which featured the hit single “I Remember” with Kaskade. He went on to become Beatport’s best selling artist that year through the sales of his various singles and was also awarded “Best Progressive House Artist” and “Best Electro Artist” by the site both in 2008 and 2009. This year he was just voted #6 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ awards (preceded by top world DJ’s like Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, and Paul Van Dyk). He’s also released his current compilation For Lack of a Better Name which features the single “Ghosts N Stuff” with Robert Swire of Pendulum. A self-professed technological “whizz kid”, Deadmau5 takes his tech-saavy background and translates it into a full audio and visual experience in his live performances. He’s currently set out on a worldwide “For Lack of a Better Name Tour” in support of his recent release. His live performances are known to feature his signature mouse head costume as well as full visual video and lighting effects to enhance the audio experience his DJ sets provide to fans. He’ll be returning to Chicago along his world tour on Friday, November 20 at the Congress Theater. It’s been a busy year for Pee Thug and Dave 1, the best friends who make up Chromeo. They released their recent electrofunk single “Night By Night”, a cover of The Eagles “I Can’t Tell You Why” and a 2009 DJ-Kicks compilation for the !K7 Records series. The DJ-Kicks mix (the first since Booka Shade’s 2007 compilation)   features a selection of tracks ranging from artists like Kano and The Alan Parsons Project to Lifelike. The compilation stays true to the 80s disco pop sound that helped influence the sexy retro style of their first two albums She’s Lost Control and Fancy Footwork. They’re currently on tour in support of the release and will be making their stop in Chicago this Friday night. Joining Chromeo on the bill are fellow Canadians Crystal Castles (who got their name from the 1980s She-Ra cartoon). Crystal Castles are producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass (who topped NME’s “2008 Cool List”). After a few of their lo-fi electro punk singles hit the music blog scene to much hype, Crystal Castles went on to release their 2008 self titled debut to positive reviews. The release was followed by heavy touring through the festival circuit as well as international headlining tours, and a high energy performance from Glass and crew at this summer’s Lollapalooza. Kicking off the night will be Boys Noize who’s currently touring in support of his new full-length album Power featuring his signature electrotech sound. If his recently aired BBC Essential Mix (packed with Classic House and Techno heavyhitters) is any indication of what to expect, he should have no problem getting the dance party started right.
